OK it's out of focus but good to see my Glasgow
book on the top shelf at Waterstones. (Top left).

Ruth Nicol @ The Kelly Gallery, Glasgow

Running now at The Kelly Gallery in Glasgow is Ruth Nicol's
solo exhibition. Ruth came second this week in the Jolomo
Landscape Awards. Quite a week for Ruth. That's her in the
spotted dress. Drop in and have a wee look.

If you find yourself near Carcassonne in the south of France
this summer, take a trip to Le Somail on the Canal Du Midi.
This is a very pretty spot. There you will find the gallery and
studio of my friend Denis CarriƩre. Denis is there from May
until October...working on the spot creating paintings. He is
well priced and does some good work. The wee gallery also
sells his cards and prints.

Hutcheson's Grammar School Art Show 2013

As always, the Annual Art Exhibition at Hutcheson's Grammar
School in Glasgow is one to watch. This year the department has
excelled itself with a show exhibiting wonderfully diverse skills.
Drawing is the mainstay here. You can see that the pupils are
taught to observe and make drawings as the beginnings of the
creative process and that process is skill based. How refreshing
to see after the art school degree shows whose exhibitions show less
drawing skill than this one. The range of ideas is fabulous.
Congratulations to students and staff. It's no wonder that ex pupils
go on to such diverse careers within the art world.
The exhibition was opened by former pupil Rosamund West who
is editor in chief of The Skinny Magazine. Says it all really.

Exhibition running at Hutcheson's Grammar School, 21 Beaton Road,

The two black and white images are huge prints by Catherine Cameron.
Very impressive, theatrical, statuesque....great show.

The lower image is a wonderful plaster cast of a Persian rug by Rachel
Levine. It's a beautiful object.

GSA Degree Shows

One of the first shows we saw at Glasgow School of Art was
Sophie Cook. Interesting mixture of print, assemblage, collage.
Liked it. Had a nice experimental feel with a guiding intelligence
behind it.
Titles from top down are: Wet Paint, Question your Spoons (1)
and Network.

On the whole the degree shows display great ideas and a lot of
digital work of good quality. Actual painting continues to suffer
and there is little skill in the drawing. Hopefully those who show
promise will simply practice in their own time.
Over in the Illustration shows there is some good drawing
behind the work...especially Gillian Stewart.

Part of the Gala Day was the scarecrow competition.
This is one scary scarecrow. Bit creepy.
Very well done.

Last weekend saw the village Gala and the Isle
of Cumbrae Pipe Band led the parade. Great.

It's been a week. I've been busy....up to my
neck with all sorts. Mostly juggling painting and
house restoration. It must end soon!
Anyway I had a complaint from my dear friend
Betsy in Miami that I hadn't put anything new on
my blog. So Betsy...this and the next few are for
you. My apologies to everyone for being absent.
